US Congressman. He attended the University of Michigan, (1843-45), engaged in the Lake Superior region as explorer for the Montreal Mining Company in 1846 and was assistant clerk of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1853. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854 and practiced Law in the Lake Superior region. Returning to Detroit, Michigan, he was city attorney of Detroit, (1857-60) and a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1865-66). He was attorney of the police board of Detroit, (1867-79) and judge of the superior court of Detroit, (1879-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses and served until his death at age 63.
