One of eight children to Judson Bele Hungerford and Alice Helen Moore Hungerford.

In World War I he was a Machine Gunner in the Army.

He married Mary Esther Huebner in 1920 and their children were Louis Newell Hungerford, Jr. born in 1921 and Emily Alice Hungerford Larson, born in 1924.

Louis was the Superintendent of Schools in Volga, Iowa for many years and then moved to Marengo, Iowa and was the Principal of the High School there. At both schools he taught biology.

He died in Washington state at the home of his son, Louis Jr. and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga, Clayton County, Iowa.
