U.S. Congressman. Educated at the University of Michigan, (1857-59), he moved to Claiborne County, Mississippi, became a teacher and returned to Michigan at the outbreak of the Civil War. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in Company D, 9th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he was superintendent of the public schools of Jackson in 1867, graduated from the University of Michigan, in 1868, engaged in banking in 1870 and was treasurer of Gratiot County Michigan, in 1872. He was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1882-83), Mayor of St. Louis, Michigan, in 1893 and a member of the board of control of the Michigan State Asylum. In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1909. Not a not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in banking until his death at age 86.
