U.S. Congressman. He studied medicine Grass Lake Academy, graduated from the Cleveland Medical College, in 1850 and practiced of medicine in Otsego, Michigan. During the Civil War, he served as surgeon of the 21st Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of medicine, was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1869-70) and was a member of the Michigan State board of health, (1880-93). In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1897. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the practice of medicine until his death at age 89.
