Civil War Confederate Army Officer, Historian. Born in Swan Pond, Tennessee, he received his education at Washington College in Tennessee and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied medicine. During the Civil War, he served as a surgeon for the Confederate Army, and also engaged in banking, railroading, and education during his varied career. He founded the first historical society in Tennessee, and was the author of "The Annals Of Tennessee". His autobiography and letters have also been published. During the Battle for Knoxville in 1862, his house was burned by Union soldiers. This single act destroyed most of Tennessee's early colonial records.
