Herbert Abraham Walker, 83, of Lansing, Kansas, passed away at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday, April 20, 2010.

Herb was born October 25, 1926, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Pearl Josephine (Martin) and Abraham Gary Walker.

He was proud to serve his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II after he enlisted at the age of 17. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and served in many actions and areas of the Pacific. After he was honorably discharged from service, Herb graduated from Leavenworth High School, Kansas City Kansas Junior College, and studied civil engineering and land surveying at the University of Kansas.

Herb and his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen Huffman, were married June 19, 1949. He taught at Stony Point School in Easton, Kansas. Herb was a licensed land surveyor with several companies, including Sandin Survey and Don White Surveying Company, and was a construction inspector. Herb was a 50-year member of King Solomon Masonic Lodge #10 and Byington #177 Eastern Star. He was a member of Fidelity #11 White Shrine of Jerusalem. Herb served as Associate Guardian for Job's Daughters. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Herb served on the Lan-Del Water Board. He was a former Shriner and Fraternal Order of Eagles member.

Herb loved the Lord and his church, Michigan Avenue Methodist Church and later Southern Heights United Methodist Church. He and Mary Ellen were youth leaders there for many years. Herb held numerous positions including trustee and member of the building committee. He was proud to serve as Scoutmaster and held many other leadership positions in Boy Scouts.

Herb worked as a volunteer at the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum in Leavenworth. He enjoyed the restoration of the carousel and later being a carousel operator. Herb loved being outside, working on the yard, and having his family around.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; daughter, Kathleen Behrens (Dean), Kansas City, Kansas; son, Paul Walker (Robyn Smith), Gladstone, Missouri; daughter, Kim Fibelkorn (Paul), Edgerton, Kansas; grandchildren, Renee Casey (Joe); Thomas Behrens (Sammy Jo); Joseph and David Walker; Brian and Michael Fibelkorn; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Shannon, and Mary Bethany Casey; sister, Betty Hermann; brother, Kenneth Walker (Ruth); sister-in-law Freda Walker; brothers-in-law Raymond Huffman and Grant Huffman; sister-in-law Flora Virginia Lockhart (Mark); and many nieces and nephews.

Herb is preceded in death by his brother, Lowell Walker.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. with Masonic Service at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 26 at Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee Street, Leavenworth, Kansas. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 27 at Southern Heights United Methodist Church, 726 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas. The Rev. Loren Drummond will be officiating. Memorials may be sent to Southern Heights United Methodist Church or the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum of Leavenworth.
