Feb. 21, 1927 - July 30, 2011
Sandy resident Valerie Patricia Bartlow died Saturday, July 30, at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center after a month-long fight with pneumonia and congestive heart failure. She was 84.
A private family service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Valerie was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia, to Thomas and Annie (Sherlock) Dawson. She was raised in Ipswich and graduated from St. Mary's High School at the age of 16.
Upon graduation she received a scholarship to a teachers college, but World War II put her career on hold. While working as a secretary at the Australian Department of Aircraft Production, Valerie met Edward G. Bartlow, a U.S. Navy Seabee stationed in Brisbane, Australia. They married April 24, 1944, in Brisbane.
Valerie worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper for Kaiser/Willys in Portland in the early 1950s. She later became a homemaker and raised four children. She was involved in their activities, helping out as a den mother and as a Brownie and Campfire Girl leader.
She went back to college at age 46 and received two associate degrees from Portland Community College while making the dean's list.
Valerie resided in Pomona, Calif., for a brief time but spent almost 60 years in Beaverton before moving to Sandy in 2005.
Valerie was an avid golfer and served as the first and second president of the Meriwether Women's Golf Club.
She was a Publinks member as well as a member of the National 13-and-under Club. She was an expert at crossword puzzles, played the piano and organ, and loved reading.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1989.
Survivors include her daughters, Diane Grudem of Cerrillos, N.M., Janice Smith of Bend and Lorelie Young of Hillsboro; son, David Bartlow of Sandy; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
