John C Raney, oldest son of Felix and Hannah Raney, was born Nov. 18, 1845 and departed this life Aug.4, 1930, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 14 days. He was first married to Maggie Reed and to this union two daughters were born, one dying in infancy, and the other Mrs. Lee Nichols, preceded him in death five years ago. He was married a second time to Judy Briscoe, Dec. 30, 1875. To this union six children were born, namely, Mrs. Ira Zumwalt, Granville, Pearly, who died at the age of ten years, Mrs. Rebecca Wells, Jim and Walter. This wife died Dec 8, 1924.
He united with the Baptist church at Davis 16 years ago under the ministry of Rev. J. S. Eames, and lived a consistent Christian ever after. He leaves to mourn his passing five children, 20 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers. Uncle John passed away at the home of his sisters, Alice and Belle Raney, in Briscoe, where he was tenderly cared for in the last days of his illness. He had lived in Lincoln County all of his life, being born near Old Alexandria. He was a good husband and father, devoted to his children. He bore his sickness with that gentle spirit which was characteristic of his life. His children were all with him to do all that loving hands could do in his last days. Mr. Raney followed his brother, James L. Raney, who departed this life six weeks ago. Funeral services were conducted by his old pastor, Rev. J S Eames, at the church in Briscoe, Aug 4.
