Deceased Name: William D. Barney, Texas poet, dies at 85

Beginning with his first poem in English class at the old Central High School, William D. Barney used words effortlessly, molding them into pieces of art.

Mr. Barney would work for the U.S. Postal Service in North Texas for more than 30 years before retiring in 1971. But he would become best known for the way he worked with words.

One of Texas' most distinguished poets, Mr. Barney, 85, died Monday morning at Trinity Terrace retirement center.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, 1000 Penn St.

Mr. Barney published several collections of poems, including Words from a Wide Land. In 1962, he received a national Robert Frost Award for the poem The Killdeer Crying. And in 1982, he was appointed poet laureate of Texas for a year.

A lifelong observer of his community, Mr. Barney wrote many poems about Fort Worth, and some of them were collected into A Cowtown Chronicle, published in 1999 to recognize Fort Worth's sesquicentennial. Among the poems in the collection are Canticle for a Cutting Horse; other subjects include the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Flatiron Building, the Botanic Research Institute of Texas, Riverside Park, cowboy Bill Pickett and TV meteorologist HaroldTaft.

Born on April 19, 1916, in Tulsa, Okla., Mr. Barney moved to Fort Worth in 1928 with his family. After graduating from Central High School, now R.L. Paschal High School, he briefly attended Texas Christian University before going to work for the Postal Service. Mr. Barney liked bird-watching.

After his funeral Wednesday, Mr. Barney will be buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary L. Barney; sons William C. Barney, Winston A. Barney, Ronald E. Barney and Robert E. Barney; a brother, Fred O. Barney; a sister, Zona Pyron; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
