Severn [sic] Koop, the senior member of the grocery firm of S. & J. W. Koop, died at the Sanitarium on Wednesday afternoon at 3:35 o'clock, his death bed surrounded by those whom he most loved in life. He was a victim of Bright's disease of the kidneys, with which malady he has been afflicted only during the past few months, being previously strong and rugged and enjoying the best of health. He broke down during the winter, and on the advice of physicians went to Florida to regain his health, but he had a very bad spell of sickness while absent. He returned a few weeks ago, and appeared to be benefitted, but was soon taken worse and never again recovered. He was removed from his home to the Sanitarium for better care, and there his busy life ended.
Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1851 [sic]. At the early age of 13 he shipped as a sailor, and for 14 years he followed the sea for a livelihood, advancing to the rank of mate. He sailed all over the world, the scenes of the battles of Manilla and Santiago being as familiar to him as the well traveled Atlantic. In 1878 he went to St. Joseph, Minn., where his parents had located. For three years, until 1881, he managed a store at Sauk Rapids for Linneman & Demeules [sic], when he came to Brainerd to work for Linneman & Koop. He remained in their employ and for their receivers until March, 1884, when he purchased the stock of the receivers in company with J. W. Koop, with whom he has since been associated, conducting the largest grocery business in the city, or for that matter, in northern Minnesota. In 1887 [sic] he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Early, and to them has been born four children, two boys and two girls, who now mourn a loving father's loss. His aged mother, who resides in East Brainerd, and three brothers, Ex-Mayor, J. H. Koop, J. W. and John Koop, all living in this city also survive him.
Deceased was a man of exemplary habits and character. He was steady and industrious to a fault, his close attention to business and hard work, undoubtedly affecting his health. An indulgent father and a loving husband as well as an upright and industrious citizen, his death is a great loss not only to his family but to the community at large.
The funeral services will be held at the St. Francis Catholic church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. Father Lynch officiating. (Brainerd Dispatch, Friday, 02 May, 1901, p. 1, c. 3) [Contributed by John Van Essen]

                  Late Severin Koop.
                            _____

The funeral obsequies of the late Severin Koop were held at St. Francis Catholic church last Saturday morning at nine o'clock, and in point of attendance were the largest and most imposing yet held in the city.
Shortly after his death the remains were taken from the Sanitarium to the family home, on 3rd street north, where they were viewed on Thursday and Friday by hundreds of sympathizing friends and neighbors. The parlor in which the remains rested was a bower of beautiful flowers contributed by friends. Indeed the floral testimonials of affection and esteem were so many and elaborate that we publish a partial list as follows:
Mrs. Elizabeth Koop, wife of deceased: Loving wreath of white roses, lilies, white carnations, sweet peas and other beautiful flowers.
Children: A loving heart "Papa Dear." Ground work white carnations studded over the words "Papa Dear" with white roses, edged with pink roses interspersed with lilies of the valley and sweet peas.
Koop Brothers: Loving pillow inscribed on bed of white carnations "Beloved Brother," bordered with white roses and white lilies.
Miss Rosa and Wm. H. Koop: A beautiful wreath of white lilies, white and pink roses with center bar of white carnations inscribed "Uncle."
