DECATUR — A 17-year-old Decatur man died just blocks from his home in a shooting incident shortly before midnight Thursday that Decatur police termed "a cold-hearted and despicable crime."

Macon County Coroner Michael Day identified the victim as Caleb A. Witty. In a release Friday, Day said Witty succumbed to gunshot wounds at St. Mary's Hospital shortly after midnight.

Witty stepped between his sister and the armed man, Walker said, and the suspect pistol whipped him. As the 14-year-old began running toward her residence, which is in the nearby area, she heard a gunshot. Upon arriving home, she sought help from her mother, who ran to the scene and assisted a patrol sergeant with CPR efforts on her 17-year-old son.
Police had responded to the scene after receiving a call reporting the sound of a gunshot and a bullet striking the caller's residence in the 400 bock of South 23rd Street. As officers were responding to the area, they discovered Witty, shot and unresponsive.
