Car Kills Two School Girls on Highway
Soldiers Grove, Wis, Sept 14 (AP)- Two Crawford county school girls were killed today as they walked along the highway to the one-room rural schoolhouse at Trout Creek. They were Orla Mae Schoville, 12, and Bonnie Adkins, 8, who Acting Coroner A.W. Speck said were struck by a car driven by Clifford Thompson, 17. The authorities said Thompson was on his way to a farm nearby the scene of the accident where Ted Thompson, his father, and Louis (s/b Dewey) Schoville and Vilas Adkins, fathers of the victims were at work. The Schoville girl died instantly and the other child a short time later. The coroner said the accident occurred apparently when Thompson turned out of the way of another car. Speck commissioned a coroner's jury to investigate.

Orla May Schoville and Bonnie Adkins both attended Trout Creek School, District number 13, in Soldiers Grove, WI. They were starting 6th grade. The school had grades 1-8, had 33 students and the teacher was Merl McDaniel, who was 20 yrs old. School had started on August 30, 1937 and then was closed on Friday, September 10th for the Gays Mills Fair. After Orla and Bonnie were killed on their way to school, the school was closed until September 20th. There is no note as to what happened to the girls, with the exception of the letter D written on the September 14th column. Both Orla May's and Bonnie's lines have their birth dates, ages and what grade they were in.
