He was assigned to Company A, 48th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division.

He sacraficed his life near St. Vith, Liege, Belgium.

This engagement was known as The Battle Of The Bulge.

Return Bodies of 3 Central Wis. Soldiers

Bodies of three more central Wisconsin soldiers who were killed in action on European battlefields during World War II are being returned to the United States aboard the army transport Robert Burns, due to arrive in New York Tuesday.

The three from this area are:

Pvt. Willard W. Burkhardt, Route 2, Arpin.

Pfc. George M. Baumgartner, Almond.

T/5 Bernard A. Suplicki, Stevens Point.

The bodies of Pvt. Burkhardt and Suplicki are being returned from Henri Chapelle military cemetery at Eupen, Belgium, while Pfc. Baumgartner was buried in the cemetery at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, 10 miles west of Bayeux, France.

Pvt. Burkhardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Burkhardt, was killed March 15, 1945 while serving with the infantry in Germany, at the age of 19. He had entered military service August 25, 1944, receiving training at Camp Crowder, Mo., Camp Livingston, La., and Fort George G. Mead, Md., before going overseas in early February.

Born February 14, 1926 at Kiel, Calumet county, he moved to Wood county in 1937 and graduated from Auburndale High school as valedictorian of the class of 1944.
