U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Brown University, Rhode Island, in 1848, from Harvard Law School in 1850, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced practice in Savannah, Georgia. He was solicitor general of the eastern judicial circuit of Georgia, (1854-580, a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1858-59) a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, in 1860. During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant in the Chatham Artillery, Confederate Army and was a member of the First and Second Confederate Congresses, (1862-65). After the war, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1872. In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until his death at age 49.
