U.S. Senator. Born the son of Judge Thomas Usher Pulaski Charlton, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Savannah, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, in 1828, a United States District Attorney and judge of the Chatham County, Superior Court, in 1832. He also was Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, (1839-41). In 1852, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Macpherson Berrien, serving until 1853. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 46. Charlton County Georgia, is named after him.
