Arrangements to be Made for Services – Pioneer Succumbs at Ely Celebration

Elks will conduct the funeral services for Richard Whiteside, 4409 London Road, pioneer lumberman and resident of Duluth, who died suddenly of heart failure at Ely Friday night while attending the Old Settlers' celebration. The body was brought to Duluth and taken to Crawford's undertaking parlors yesterday. Complete arrangements for the funeral are yet to be made.
Mr. Whiteside, who lived in Duluth for 28 years, was well known on the ranges and in northern Minnesota. He has scores of friends among the old settlers of this part of the country, some of whom were with him when he died.
Mr. Whiteside was born in Ireland in 1843, coming to Ontario, Can., when 5 years of age. He had been engaged in the lumber and logging business for many years. In 1887 he entered the lumber business in Duluth. When Mr. Whiteside first came to northern Minnesota he located a homestead on the present site of the village of Fall Lake.
