U.S. Congressman. Graduating from the law department of the University of Georgia, in 1898, he was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced to practice law in Reidsville, Georgia. He engaged in agricultural pursuits and served a s a Second Lieutenant in the Oglethorpe Light Infantry of the 1st Georgia Regiment of Infantry, (1903-04). In 1907, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1917. Not seeking reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was president of the Savannah Board of Trade, (1919-20). In 1920, he was again elected to the Sixty-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until his death from at heart attack at age 53.
