On Monday May 2nd, Wilhelm Hartwig, Sr., died of liver cancer at his home at Browns Corner in the Town of Hubbard, at the age of 80 years, nine months and 28 days after being sick since December. He was born July 10, 1840 in Jacobsdorf, Province of Pomerania, Germany, married Johanna Korth on April 21, 1870, and on May 15, 1874 the couple emigrated to America. The marriage bore eight children, six sons and two daughters, of whom one son, Paul and one daughter, Tillie preceded the father in death.

Last year the couple celebrated their golden wedding in apparently good health.

Mr. Hartwig was a veteran of the Civil War and the family previously lived in the Town of Theresa and then moved to Browns Corner where the deceased worked in the lime kiln for 15 years.

Besides his widow he leaves behind the children: Carl Hartwig in Wittenberg; Robert Hartwig, August Hartwig, John Hartwig, Wm. Hartwig, all in the Town of Hubbard and Ida, Mrs. Fritz Gramlow in Mayville, as well as two sisters, Mrs. Albert Kuehn of Beaver Dam and Mrs. Wm. Rediske, sen., in Mayville, he also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

On Wednesday afternoon the funeral took place at 1 o'clock from the house to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Browns Corner and the parish cemetery, officiated by Pastor W. Stoehr.
