Emma was born Jan. 26, 1919, on the family farm near Benedict, to Lohven and Bessie (Novlesky) Bovkoon. She attended a country school near her home for the first eight years of her schooling and graduated from Velva High School in 1938. Following her graduation, she attended a business college in Minot.
In 1940, she moved to Oakland, Calif., and met her future husband, Yale A. Mendell. They were married on May 18, 1941, in Oakland. They lived and worked for many years in California. In 1974, Emma and Yale retired to Salem, Ore. They moved to Washburn in the fall of 1983. Yale passed away in 1985. In May 2008, Emma moved to Underwood.
Emma enjoyed traveling and creative hand work. She loved children and often babysat for family and friends.
She is survived by three sisters, Agnes (Harold) Gasmann, Max, Mabel Dahl, Garrison, and Violette Okerson, Turtle Lake; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and three sisters.
