COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Sammy Cooper, 79, of Cookeville, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 3-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, and again Friday from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
Mr. Cooper passed away Aug. 3, 2011, at NHC Nursing Home.
He was born June 20, 1932, in Bolivar County, Miss.
Mr. Cooper attended high school in Cleveland, Miss., Freed-Hardeman College and graduated from David Lipscomb College with a degree in accounting. He served the Mississippi National Guard and was on active duty with the Army in 1951-52. He also graduated from Nashville School of Preaching. He spent most of his life in the accounting and office management field of work. For about 30 years he served as a part-time minister for area Churches of Christ. He was a member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Peggy Overall Cooper; two children, Phillip Cooper and wife Linda of Maiden, N.C., and Mary Anne Cooper Lankford and husband Charles Lankford of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Jonathan Cooper, Patrick, Rachel and Ethan Lankford; two brothers, James Edward and George Albert Cooker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents, James Albert and Rosie Edison Walker Cooper; two brothers, Oscar and Ralph Cooper; and a sister, Betty Cooper Channel.
Joe Neal, Jerry Nash and Buddy Johnson will officiate the services.
