Horse Doctor in Civil War Vet. Surgeon in the 8th Ill. Vol. Calvary. Mustered out as Captain. Cremated in 1897 and retained by family. Ashes were misplaced and then relocated in 1989. Buried in same grave in Wauconda as his daughter Jennie R. Farnsworth in August 1989 as per Charles' original request.
Survivor of the Chicago Fire.
His first wife was Lucy Ann Selfridge and they married in July 15 1852. Lucy Ann was the daughter of Dr. Lorenzo D. Selfridge & Eunice Johnson. It seems probable that Charles met his first wife in the Dr. Selfridge's home where he had gone to study horse medicine in Will County, Illinois. Will County was where they married. Their first child Clarence (inf.) is buried in Wauconda. Eunice their second child is also buried in Wauconda. Lucy Ann Selfridge was born in 1833 in Mass. and died in 1858 in Minn.
Charles married again to Mary Elizabeth Potter in Mar 25 1866. She died 19 July 1875. Of their 5 children, four died as young children and only Jennie Ruhama Wright Farnsworth lived to grow up and marry and have children.
Charles was in an Old Soldier's Hospital by 1885 and remained there until his death in December 1897 while his only surviving child Jennie Ruhama Wright Farnsworth was in Mexico. For this reason he was cremated and the ashes retained by his daughter, but by the time she died in 1960 the tiny blue milk can with his ashes had been misplaced. Upon clearing out the house of his grandson in 1989 the can was recovered among Jennie's belongings in a trunk in the basement (attached to the trunk was a tag reading "Ashes") and finally this Civil War Veteran could be buried in Wauconda in the grave of his daughter as he desired.
