John Nilsson Holmes was originally named Johannes Nilsson, born to Nils Hansson (1816-??) and Anna Mansdotter (1834-??). His father changed his surname to Holm during the process when Sweden was ending its patronymic naming system. The surname Holm eventually became Holmes which is the surname John used most of his life. He immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden in 1882 and married Ida May McKinney on 13 May 1893 in Farmington, IL. They had seven children together (see Ida May McKinney Holmes memorial for a listing of the children.)
He spent his life as a coal miner. This was still in the days where mining in central Illinois consisted of men going down deep into the earth and removing coal. That whole process changed in the mid-20th century when strip mining became the standard practice and huge steam shovels removed the dirt from atop the coal and made the coal vein accessible. John died at the age of 71. John and his wife, Ida, are buried in the Mausoleum at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
