It is my belief that Elias Campbell was born in Jamaica and was brought to the colony of Virginia by ships owned by our Campbell's and the reason we can't find immigration records. They were extremely large landowners of plantations in Jamaica and shipped their goods all over the world. It was not uncommon for them to hop on one of their families ships for anyplace they chose to go. These same Campbell's also provided indentured servants to George Washington and shipped goods from England to him. Proof of this is in the files of George Washington's letters and the Campbell letter books which are in Australia to prove this. Our Campbell's from Scotland had long settled Jamaica in the 1690's.
Since John Campbell married the widow Spotswood, Elias obviously stood to not inherit a thing from control of that family and he was already dead by the time Mary died in 1798.
His home still stands in Madison Co. Virginia and was called "Back of Beyond". The log-bodied home dates to 1764, when Elias Campbell married Elizabeth Yowell (Owel), daughter of Christopher Yowell (Owel).
Elias bought 200 acres of land from Thomas Starke on the north fork of the Robinson River in 1760 for 30 pounds and five shillings and annual rent of one peppercorn on Lady Day next. Lady Day, March 25, was the legal beginning of the year until 1752, which commemorated the annunciation of the Virgin Mary. This land on the north fork of the Robinson River was land Starke purchased from the King of England by grant dated June 1, 1736.
After Elias married Elizabeth, his father in law Christopher Owel/Yowell gave his son-in-law 511 acres of land on the north and south side of the north branch of the Robinson River he had purchased in 1754 from John and Elizabeth Frogg, who had received 1100 acres in tenancy from the King in 1749.
In 1780 Elias added to his holdings a land grant purchased from Thomas, Lord Fairfax of 101 acres of waste and ungranted land adjoining his property. When he died in 1793 his real estate was only 300 acres leaving to his daughters Nancy and Frankey. The others mentioned in his will were daughters, Elizabeth Sisk, Mary Sisk, and Sarah Lillard and a granddaughter, Sarah, the child of his son John who married Simeon Lewis.
Frankey married Augustine Lillard and bult the home now owned by the Hardison family, and Sarah married John Lillard in 1792. John was killed during a trip from one of the salt licks in Virginia.
In 1809, Simeon and Sarah Lewis sold the property to Simeon Bates and in 1824 at the death of Simeon Bates, the 150 acres went to William Clatterbuck.

This Indenture made the 21st day of Jan. in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Three between Elias Campbell of the County of Culpeper, Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part, and Bartlett Sisk, of the County and Commonwealth aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth: that the said Elias Campbell, for and in consideration of the sum of L10 current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Bartlett Sisk before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as the real love and affection he hath and bears to the said Sisk, Husband to his daughter Mary, has bargained and sold, given and transferred and by these presents do bargain and sell and give, transfer and confirm unto the said Bartlett Sisk, his heirs and assigns forever, one negro girl named Marget, about 12 years old, and the said Elias Campbell and his heirs shall and will warrant and by these presents forever defend the said negro unto him and the said Bartlett Sisk, his heirs and assigns free and clear from the Trust Claim of any person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof the said Elias Campbell hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year above written.
