"Wharky" was named after General J. A. Wharton, the third commander of Terry's Texas Rangers under whom his father had served in the Civil War. He attended the Univ. of Virginia, A.B.M.A. in 1889 & he received his law degree from the Univ. of Texas Law School 1912. During WWI he was commissioned a Captain in the Air Service. He made his home in Houston and was a partner at Vinson, Elkins, Weems & Searls where he specialized in tax law and estate plans. In addition to legal responsibilities with his firm, he served on several corporate Boards of Directors of large companies. He married Mathilde (Tilly) Booth 11/2/1918 and they had three children: Mrs. Betty W. Denver, Ben & Fontaine Carrington. Besides the law, he enjoyed hunting & was reknown as a crack shot. Two birds crossing were often brought down with one shell. During the summers his family enjoyed his 15 acre summer place named "Mildendo" after his grandfather's home place in Virginia. This vacation home was located on Galveston Bay at La Porte. He got great pleasure in planting and cultivating many pecan, fig and other fruit trees on his property. Besides his many accomplishments he published a book of poems titled "Poems by Wharton E. Weems- 1889-1961".
