ASHTABULA — Robert M. “Robbie” Puffer, age 84, of North Kingsville, Ohio, died Saturday morning, July 30, 2011, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula, Ohio.

He was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Conneaut, Ohio, and was the son of Harold L. and Mary (Montgomery) Puffer. Rob grew up in East Conneaut and attended Rowe High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He graduated in 1944 and that same year was selected as First Team All-Ohio for Basketball.

After graduation, he spent time in the Merchant Marines at the end of World War II. Then, after spending a short time playing minor league baseball in Georgia, he married Mary Jane Benson in Kentucky on April 16, 1949.

He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for 15 years at the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company. In 1960, he started Puffer’s Roofing and served the area for over 40 years.

He was a member of New Leaf United Methodist Church.

Sports were a huge part of Rob’s entire life. For more than two decades, he played amateur baseball in the highly competitive Glenwood League of Erie County, Pennsylvania. He also helped the area’s youth by building a baseball field and organizing a traveling team that played teams in Cleveland’s Hot Stove League during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He shared his love of baseball with his family, visiting many major league stadiums around the country. In 2007, he was honored by being inducted into the Ashtabula County Basketball Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Puffer of North Kingsville; his son, Brett Stephen Puffer, and his wife, Jennifer (Capuano), and their son, Robert Joseph of North Kingsville; his daughter, Roberta Blaseos, and her husband, John, and son, Christophilis of Chicago, Ill.; and his brother, Gerald Puffer of Conneaut.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Willard Lewis Puffer.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 3rd, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Tim Kraus, of the Conneaut Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Kelloggsville Cemetery, Monroe Township, Ohio.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home, TODAY, Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

BRADENTON, Fla. — Willard Lewis Puffer, age 85, a native of Conneaut and a retired Chicago school teacher, died Oct. 15, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla., after a two-year battle with cancer.He was a 1942 graduate of Conneaut's former Rowe High School. He was a former president of the Retired Teachers of Chicago, West Coast Chapter, and a longtime member of the Ohio State University Alumni Chapter, in Sarasota-Bradenton. Also a World War II Veteran who served in the U.S. Army's Eighth Army headquarters in Leyte, the Philippines.In his retirement he remained active, especially in volunteer work with several organizations. For many years he taught English as a second language in Sarasota, wrote e-mail communications to missionaries for his church and delivered Meals on Wheels in Bradenton.He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Andrew) Shiff; grandson, Zachary of Massachusetts; two brothers, Robert and Jerry Puffer of Conneaut; and his lifetime friend, Sig Johnson of Bradenton. BRADENTON, Fla. — Willard Lewis Puffer, age 85, a native of Conneaut and a retired Chicago school teacher, died Oct. 15, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla., after a two-year battle with cancer.He was a 1942 graduate of Conneaut's former Rowe High School. He was a former president of the Retired Teachers of Chicago, West Coast Chapter, and a longtime member of the Ohio State University Alumni Chapter, in Sarasota-Bradenton. Also a World War II Veteran who served in the U.S. Army's Eighth Army headquarters in Leyte, the Philippines.In his retirement he remained active, especially in volunteer work with several organizations. For many years he taught English as a second language in Sarasota, wrote e-mail communications to missionaries for his church and delivered Meals on Wheels in Bradenton.He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Andrew) Shiff; grandson, Zachary of Massachusetts; two brothers, Robert and Jerry Puffer of Conneaut; and his lifetime friend, Sig Johnson of Bradenton.
