James Barbee Coston was the youngest of five children born to James Joseph and Mary Smith Coston. I have not found a census listing for his family from 1870 (prior to his birth), but it seems likely that his family lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee at the time. Genealogical records for James Barbee suggest that he resided in Lincoln County throughout his life.

An obituary for James Barbee's older brother Hamilton Ralls Coston (Memorial 60055457) lists Hamilton Ralls's birthplace as Mulberry, Tennessee in 1866. The 1880 census listed James Barbee, his parents, and three older siblings in Lincoln County.

James Barbee married Sarah Lou "Sallie" Hamilton in Lincoln County on October 20, 1895. They had two sons: Henry Grady Coston, born 1896, and Hamilton Ralls Coston, born 1899. Later birth and draft records had both sons' birthplaces as Kelso, Tennessee.

James Barbee Coston died on January 21, 1900, and was buried at Kelso Cemetery. The 1900 census showed Sallie L. Coston as a widowed head of household with her two sons in nearby Franklin County, Tennessee.

Sallie married George Grant in Franklin County on July 26, 1903. The 1910 census listed George and Sallie with Grady, Ralls, and three younger half-siblings. Grady and Ralls's last names were given incorrectly as Grant.

By the 1920 census, Grady had married and left home. Ralls Coston was listed as a stepson in Moore County, Tennessee with his Mother, George Grant, and five half-siblings.

Sally died in 1961. Her memorial (177502324) gives her burial place as Lynchburg City Cemetery in Moore County, Tennessee. Her second husband George Grant is also buried there.
