US Navy Rear Admiral. After high school Torgerson attended St. Olaf College for two years, then taught school in Red Lake County, Minnesota for two years. In 1927 Torgerson entered the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1931. After graduation he served at sea in Atlantic and Pacific commands and studied communications at the Naval Academy Postgraduate School and was the assistant coach for the Naval Academy football team. During World War II he was the Commanding Officer of the Destroyers USS Biddle and USS Waldron. He also commanded the Destroyer Soley, and the USS Toledo. From 1939 to 1942 he was a staff officer in the Atlantic Fleet and later during World War II he served on the staff to the commander of the Pacific Fleet. After the war he commanded destroyers and served in staff assignments in Italy and England. He next became the Commanding Officer of the Attack Cargo Ship Skagit in 1954. In this command he evacuated the Vietnamese civilians from Hanoi to Saigon after the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phy. Torgerson retired in 1966.
