DePew, General Sheridan, age 103, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 6:25 p.m. He was born in Clay County, KY on November 16, 1907, the son of Gilbert DePew and Anna Hacker. He married Mattie Evelyn Edwards on Dec. 24, 1926 in Hector, KY and was married for 66 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Mattie, son Archie DePew, 2 brothers, 4 sisters and parents. He is survived by his sister Ruth Burns of Salem, IN, children; Leo of Harrison, AR, Woodrow of Lead Hill, MO, Vivian Williams of Claremore, OK, Ruby Moeaschl of Port Charlotte, FL, Douglas of Greenville, SC and Wanda Wilhelm of Owasso, OK, 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 24 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Sheridan helped his father make coffins and his mother lined them. He quit school in the 4th grade to help the family make a living. At the age of 9 he was in the logging business working with mules. He also delivered mail to the surrounding area by horse and buggy after meeting the train in Garrard, KY. He moved to Ohio in 1938, where he built his home, along with his sons. He was a farmer and carpenter by trade, and helped build many historical buildings in Oxford, including McCullough Hyde Hospital, Hueston Woods Lodge, many buildings on Miami University Campus. He also worked in Connersville, IN at a factory called Rex Manufacturing and made Butterfly Bombs during WW II. He retired in 1972. Mr. DePew was a charter member of the Oxford Baptist Church which he helped build. He loved to go fishing and hunting, working with horses and teaching others those trades. He was an avid bowler. His last tournament was the Senior Olympics in West Virginia where he placed 2nd in the nation in his age bracket. Sheridan also loved going to the family reunion in KY every year and listening to Bluegrass music. Visitation was held Tuesday Aug 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford, OH and Wednesday, Aug 3, from Noon till 2 p.m. at the Oxford Baptist Church, Rt. 73 E, Oxford, funeral services began at 2.
