Hebron Journal (Hebron, NE), Thursday, August 31, 1900

Margaret K. Past was born in Delaware, March 28, 1817. Died at Hebron, Nebraska, Wednesday, August 22, 1900, aged 83 years, 4 months and 24 days, having lived over four-fifths of a century. She spent the days of her childhood in the place of her birth but finally moved with her parents to Philadelphia. Here she met John M. Past, to whom she was married December 1, 1836, and with whom she lived a happy married life, until September 25, 1876, when he died. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Past has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Bowdle. Mrs. Past was the mother of nine children, four of whom died early in childhood. Those living to age of maturity were Edward S., Marcus, John H., Mrs. Margaret Past Bowdle, and Arthur C. Marcus died at Gettysburg, John met his death several years ago as the result of a terrible accident, Edward S. resides at Grafton, West Virginia, Mrs. Bowdle and Arthur C. are residents of this city. Twenty-six grandchildren and great-grandchildren are numbered among those who revere her memory.

Mrs. Past was a woman of a rare and beautiful character. Notwithstanding she had been an invalid for forty years, and that her life had been peculiarly full of trials and afflictions, her disposition was sweet and patient to the last. True to her Quaker raising she was calm, unostentatious and thoroughly self-controlled. As a mother, loving and indulgent; as a wife, devoted and affectionate; as a neighbor, kind and thoughtful, ever ready to show her love in a practical way. Belonging as she did to a different sect of the Quakers than did her husband, she was disciplined for her marriage to him, but nothing daunted she remained true in her loyalty and devotion to him. So also was she faithful to her Christian life. Although of Quaker extraction, she with her husband became members of the Church of Christ in 1866, and during their residence in Beatrice she and her husband were the mainstays of the church of that city. While old age and enfeebled health in later years prevented her from taking an active part in church work, her interest never flagged and she was ever solicitous for the welfare of her church. To know her was to love her, and a host of friends will hold her memory dear. The words published in The Journal in connection with the obituary of John Past, in October, 1876, are now equally appropriate for his wife,

"O Heart sore-tried! Thou has the best
That Heaven itself could give thee--rest."

The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. R. A. Schell, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Bowdle, Friday afternoon, all all that was mortal was laid to rest in Sunny Slope, Hebron cemetery (sic).
