US Navy Rear Admiral. Saunders graduated from the Naval Academy in 1927. During World War II Saunders commanded the Destroyer U.S.S. Caperton and next commanded the Submarine U.S.S. Grayback from June 30, 1941 to September 22, 1942, His next command was the Submarine U.S.S. Muskallunge from March 15, 1943 to November 4, 1943. For service aboard the U.S.S. Grayback he was awarded the Navy Cross. In 1947 Saunders was the Commanding Officer, Submarine Base Key West, Florida.

Through his experience and sound judgment Lieutenant Commander Saunders brought his ship safely back to port. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
