A native of Binghamton, NY, she attended Onondoga Community College in Syracuse, NY, receiving an A.A. degree in 1975. She transferred to the University of South Florida in that year, receiving Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Education and Applied Flute in 1978. While at USF she was the winner of the student concerto competition, playing a solo concerto with the University Symphony Orchestra. She married Lakeland, FL resident Barry Zimmerman in 1977 and was active in the musical life of the central Florida area during her time there, playing in the Polk Cameratta orchestra and as soloist with the Bach Festival of Central Florida in 1978. A memorial scholarship is maintained in her name at the University of South Florida.
