YATES, Sr. Elwood Floyd, 107, of Powhatan, died in his 108th Year of our Lord, surrounded by his family on A.D. August 31, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Charles and Elia Avery Yates; and his wife of 69 glorious years, Mrs. Mary Bowles Yates. Floyd was the last surviving member of a family of 12 ( A Yates Dozen) of Charles City County, Yates.
He was the longest ever also eldest serving Masonic Mason ever in Virginia. He had the Top Degree. 33rd, world's oldest active member of Lions Club International, and Ruritan Club.
He served as an honorable Judge.
National Democrat Party Chairman of Virginia. Many meeting of national, world, and international importance where held at both of his historic residences Erin Hill and Erin Oaks.
Uncle Floyd retired as a NEW Vehicle Ford/Mercury dealer/owner after 54 years. ( We bought all our FORD's from him ) He as well owned the Pure Oil Company, and many bank Board of Directors.
He was elected with by a vast majority of his constituents while he represented all of Powhatan and Chesterfield counties as a delegate in the Virginia General Assembly from 1940 to 1951. Yes obtaining One Hundred Percent of the Votes in a few elections.

He alone saved the Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) from being becoming extinct when he was Chairman of Virginian Wildlife. Yes this is the Bird which the Country TURKEY attained that name. Tom, hen , and poults all.
He is survived by his son, Col.(Ret.) Elwood Floyd Yates Jr. and wife, Vickie; four grandchildren, Mrs. Kathy "Muffy" Yates Vestal and husband, Marty, Mr.and Mrs. Elwood F. Yates III and Mrs. Brandi Yates, Mr.William M. Yates (Ret) Virgina State Trooper , Gov.'s Helicopter Pilot Mr.William M. Yates, Mrs.Ashley G. Fitch and husband, Christopher; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

My first recollection in my life was when A. Mary was at "the old place" and we fugured it was probably in June 1926 and she was standing by the dresser telling me what a husband was, for she had married him on his 23rd birthday.
I was given by another family member the letter my grandmother Bowles wrote to A. Mary
at S.T.C now Longwood University saying Papa did not have the $100 to send her back to Farmville in 1922(there were no scholarships then even if you were valedictorian of the high school class which she was), so to Ellerson, Virginia to teach where she met the love of her life, E. Floyd Yates and added another bright light to our families.

– New Park on the Banks of the James River Becomes Virginia's 36th State Park –
POWHATAN COUNTY - Governor Bob F. McDonnell (R-Va.) today joined state and local officials on the banks of the James River as Powhatan State Park opened its gates, becoming the Commonwealth's 36th State Park.
"Not every governor has the opportunity to open a state park during their time in office," said Governor McDonnell. "This park will become an economic and cultural boon to Powhatan County and will provide increased access for all Virginians to the beautiful James River and a wealth of outdoor activities."
Governor McDonnell gave the keynote address during an afternoon ceremony with speakers including Delegate Lee Ware, Powhatan Board of Supervisors Chair Barry Hodge and other dignitaries. Throughout the day exhibitors from state and local organizations including the Powhatan Historical Society, James River Association and Virginia Museum of Radio Entertainment provided information on a variety of outdoor, cultural and historical activities. A free concert followed the ceremony and a ribbon cutting at the new park's river canoe launch.
"Virginia's award winning state parks are well known throughout the country as some of the best managed," said Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech. "Virginia is truly blessed to have all these natural resources."
Virginia's newest state park offers three picnic shelters, a children's playground, a canoe slide, equestrian parking, seven miles of multi-use trails and two miles of hiking trails. The park also includes a park office, maintenance area and staff residence. Local volunteers were instrumental in developing the park's trail system.
"This new state park along this historic stretch of the James River has already become a source of pride for many in Powhatan County," said Joe Elton, state parks director for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. "Local efforts led to the park's conservation area being named for local icon E. Floyd Yates. I think it's telling that this is the first state park to have an active volunteer group before its gates opened."
The E. Floyd Yates, Sr. area and Park, 1,564 acre Powhatan State Park with 2.5 miles of frontage along the southern bank of the James River located at 4616 Powhatan State Park Road, Powhatan, Virginia 23139.
400-acre E. Floyd Yates Conservation Area initial cost to develop the whole park was $7.5 million. The yearly operating budget is about $400,000.
French Protestants, Kinfolk called Huguenots settled nearby.

"Virginia's award winning state parks are well known throughout the country as some of the best managed," said Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech. "Virginia is truly blessed to have all these natural resources."
Virginia's newest state park offers three picnic shelters, a children's playground, a canoe slide, equestrian parking, seven miles of multi-use trails and two miles of hiking trails. The park also includes a park office, maintenance area and staff residence. Local volunteers were instrumental in developing the park's trail system.
"This new state park along this historic stretch of the James River has already become a source of pride for many in Powhatan County," said Joe Elton, state parks director for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. "Local efforts led to the park's conservation area being named for local icon E. Floyd Yates. I think it's telling that this is the first state park to have an active volunteer group before its gates opened."
The E. Floyd Yates, Sr. area and Park, 1,564 acre Powhatan State Park with 2.5 miles of frontage along the southern bank of the James River located at 4616 Powhatan State Park Road, Powhatan, Virginia 23139.
400-acre E. Floyd Yates Conservation Area initial cost to develop the whole park was $7.5 million. The yearly operating budget is about $400,000.
