Donelda was baptized in the Swedish Methodist church in Scandia, KS.
Donelda grew up in the Courtland area attending White Rock Country School where after the eighth grade had to take a test to get into high school, she then at tended three years of high school in Lovewell, KS, graduating from Courtland High in 1937. After high school she took jobs doing house work and taking care of children, and also helped during the canning season. She then worked for Floyd Sims, who owned the Belleville Greenhouse. That's where she met Lester.
Donelda married Lester R. Bowen on January 20, 1940 in the evening at the Methodist Parsonage in Scandia, KS. They went to Kansas City to visit friends and after leaving, their car stopped. They ended up at a filling station, and couldn't get it fixed till the next day, so they spent their honeymoon night on the floor of the ladies restroom.
Lester and Donelda owned and operated Hebron Floral for 36 years, retiring in 1965. Then moved to Courtland, KS to help take care of her parents returning to Hebron in 1986.
She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, Neighborhood Club, Belvidere Woman's Club, Pioneer Club, and Senior Center Card Club. She enjoyed music, cards, flowers, and especially time with the family.
Preceded in death are her parents, husband Lester, son Gene, one brother Carl, and sister Gladys Johnson.
Survivors are sons Vaughan and wife Mary of Lincoln, NE, Darrell and wife Carmen of O'Neill, NE, daughter Joyce Malone and husband Terry of Wilber, NE, sister Eunice Blackburn of Courtland, KS daughter-in-law Peggy Bowen of San Benito, TX, grandchildren Linda Price and husband John of Aurora, CO, Diane Bowen of Lincoln, NE, Richard Bowen and wife Nika of Hastings, Michael Bowen and wife Kasey of Omaha, NE, Jami Wiedner of San Benito, TX, Reeda Hickman of San Benito, TX, Lisa Bowen of Bellevue, NE, Troy Bowen and wife Jody of Lincoln, NE, Rebeca Bowen of O'Neill, NE, Heather Danenfelser and husband Fred of Peru, IN, Casey Malone of Douglas, WY, LesLee Malone of Omaha, NE, 17 Great-grandchildren, 2 Great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday June 17, 2011 at 10:30 AM at United Methodist Church in Hebron, NE. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home also 1 hour prior to service at the church. Pastor Mark Baldwin will be officiating, casket bearers and honorary casket bearers are grandchildren, organist Diane Smith, recorded hymn "He Touched Me" by Tim Fangmeier, congregational hymns "Amazing Grace", and "In The Garden", burial will be in the Hebron City Cemetery in Hebron. Memorials to the United Methodist Church in Hebron. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
