Dow Jr., a retired U.S. Air Force
major, died unexpectedly Thurs-
day, July 7, 2011, at' Clarkson
Hospital in Papillion, Neb. Doug
was born on December 7, 1950
in Machias, the son of the late
Douglas W. Dow Sr. and Marilyn
(Stanwood) Dow of Milbridge. A
1969 graduate of Narraguagus
High School, Doug was involved
in and loved all sports, especially
baseball. He attended the Uni-
vers~ty of Maine at Orono from
September 1969 to June 1972 and
enlisted in the U!S. Air Force in
September 1972. He was assigned
to Little Rock Air Force Base in
Arkansas as an analyst technician
Titan II missile combat crew
member. Doug graduated in
January 1977 from Park College
of Missouri with a bachelor's de-
gree in social psychology. Selected
to attend Officer Training School
from May to August 1978,hewas
then assigned to Ellsworth Air
Force Base in South Dakota as a
Minuteman missile maintenance
officer from September 1978 to
January 1983. He was promoted
to Captain in August 1982. From
South Dakota he was assigned
to Orfutt Air Force Base in Ne-
braska as an airborne logistics
controller on the SAC Airborne
Command Post "Looking Glass"
from January 1983 to July 1986.
Doug graduated in May 1986
from Embry Riddle Aeronauti-
cal University with a master's
degree in management. HIS next -
assignment from August 1986 to
August 1987 was at Comiso Air
Station, Sicily, as a staff division
chief in ground-launched cruise.'
missiles. Returning to the U.S.,
Doug went to Vandenburg Air
Force Base in California, working
in the Missile Test Launch Pro-

gram as chief of the maintenance
control division. InJuly 1988, he
attained the rank of major. His
decorations included Air Force
Meritorious Service Medal; Air
Force Commendation Medal,'
two devices; Air Force Achieve-
ment Medal; and Combat Readi-
ness Medal, one device. Doug
proudly served in the U.S. Air
Force for 22 years, retiring in
1995. A devout Huskers· and
Red Sox fan, Doug enjoyed yard
work, vacationing in Maine, and
most of all, he loved spending
time with his family. Doug is
survived by his wife, Marita (Ray)
Dow; his mother, Marilyn, and
his sister, Debra, of Milbridge;
a son, Chris and his wife, Amy,
of Bellevue, Neb.; two nieces,
and several nephews, cousins,
aunts and uncles. Cremation
will be performed. in Omaha.
A private graveyard service will
be held at Evergreen Cemetery
in Milbridge at a later date.
