RESPECTED CITIEN DIES

The numerous friends of William Hodgkinson, one of the old residents of the valley, will be pained to learn of his death, which occurred at his home. Wednesday evening. The immediate cause of death was hemorrhage of the brain, resulting from two paralytic strokes, one seven weeks ago and another last Sunday night. As he has always been a hale, hearty man and almost a stranger to sickness, his death was doubtless due to the severe injuries which were sustained when he was thrown from his wagon at Reynold's Mill, last winter. The nature of his illness and the fact that the end was near were made known to the family by Dr. Farrett O'Donnell last Monday. But his demise cames as a suprise to all but his immediate friends, as it is only a short time ago that he was around attending to business and was around attending to business and was present at public gatherings.

Deceased was one of our honorable, upright and substantial citizens. From the early settlement of the Ashley Valley he has labored untiringly for the upbuilding of the country. In church affairs he was faithful and consistant and has held a number of positions in ward and auxiliary organizations.

William Hodgkinson is the son of William Hodgkinson and Ann Martin Hodgkinson. His birth occurred at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, March 5th, 1834. It will be observed that he was in his 73rd year, During the summer of 1868 he became a convert to the religion of the Latter-Day Saints and in 1874 he emigrated to Utah. Miss Hepzibah Gardiner was a member of the company of Saints with which he made the journery from England and a mutual attachment for each other followed and resulted in their marriage a few months after their arrival in Utah during the year 1874. They resided at Pleasant Grove until 1881, when the family moved to Vernal and since that time have been members of this community.

Mr. and Mrs. Hodgkinson are the parents of thirteen children, seven boys and six girls. All but two of these, a son and a daughter are still living.

One of the daughters, Mrs. Rose Evans, was on the road from Salt Lake City, when her father's death occurred and the family decided to send a light conveyance to meet her and to postpone the funeral until her arrival.
