AREA'S OLDEST RESIDENT DIES AT 94

Funeral services for Hepzibah Gardiner Hodgkinson, 94, Uintah basin pioneer who died on Christmas day, were conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Vernal First Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, by Orion R. Jones, Vernal Third Ward Bishop.

Mrs. Hodgkinson was born on May 7, 1854, in Chalford Hill, Gloucestershire, England and left the old world for America when she was 20 years of age. On the American-bound ship she met William Hodgkinson whom she married in the LDS Endowment House in Salt Lake City on June 29, 1874. She was a daughter of William and Sarah Hughes Gardiner.

The couple made their home in Pleasant Grove for seven years and they lived under the United Order six years.

In 1881 the family came to Ashley Valley with the first four children, the youngest of whom was only three weeks old.

Mrs. Hodgkinson raised 13 children, eight of whom survive her. In 1906 her husband died, leaving her with 11 children to raise, which she did in a manner to rouse tributes of her friends and neighbors.

She had always been an active worker in the LDS church, particularly in the Primary and Relief Society organization. Her later years were spent in genealogical and research work in the church.

Mrs. Hodgkinson died December 25 at 5 a.m. at the home of a son, John Hodgkinson in Vernal of causes incident to age.

Survivors include four sons and four daughters. John, Lewis and Albert Hodgkinson, all of Vernal; Fred Hodgkinson, Bell Gardens, California; Mrs. Mary Atwood, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Violet Cook, Hiawatha, Carbon County; Mrs. Nellie Hathaway, Los Angeles; Mrs. Elsie Searle, Monrovie, California; 43 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and one great grandchild.
