Louis Felix Bodden, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Winfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Crockett, Texas surrounded by his loving family. He was 95 years young. Louis and his wife, Carmelita, moved to Lovelady in November of 2005.
Louis was born and grew up in Georgewest, Texas. He never played sports but he would break horses for $.25 a ride and that was good money back in his day. The story goes that he was thrown from one of those horses and broke his collar bone, never telling his parents for fear of a whipping. For the rest of his life, his left shoulder hung down lower than the right and he walked with a crooked stance.
Louis and Carmelita met at a filing station in Edinburg, Texas where she was working. Louis asked her to marry him shortly after they met and the rest is history. They were married on January 15, 1949. Carmelita was in and out of the nursing home for seven years before passing away. Never a day went by that Louis didn’t drive into Crockett from Lovelady to visit with her.
Louis worked in the oilpatch all his working life. He was a simple man but a very good and honest man that loved his family. His passion was fishing and hunting and he had the stories to prove it.
In addition to hunting and fishing, Louis loved working in his yard. Growing up in south Texas, their home was always beautifully manicured with lavish green grass and large trees. People would stop on the side of the road and take pictures of their home. In his older years, he enjoyed planting a garden, planting rows and rows of tomatoes. He wanted to have plenty to give away to his friends and as he got older, 90ish, it became harder and harder for him to work the garden. It was at that point that it became “our garden”, the family. Louis taught them how to plant and “hoe the garden properly”. It was a lot of work and yes, they would get so frustrated with him because every year he wanted the garden bigger. Looking back now, they cherish those hours we spent tending our garden during most visits.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Carmelita Hosack Bodden; parents, Ben and Amelia Bodden; brother, Daniel and sisters, Catherine and Annie; grandson, Shannon Larue; granddaughter, Jenise Womack.
