Civil War Union Army Officer. Stockton graduated from West Point in 1827, was appointed a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, and served in posts including Missouri, Minnesota and Michigan before resigning his commission in 1836. He then established himself as an engineer on Great Lakes projects, as well as projects on the Ohio and Indiana Rivers. In 1838 he was elected the first Mayor of Michigan City, Indiana, and he later settled in Flint, Michigan. In 1847 he volunteered for the Mexican War and was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment. During most of his service Stockton was Military Governor of Cordova, Mexico, and he was mustered out at the end of the war in 1848. From 1852 to 1858 he lived in California, where he was employed in mining and telegraph construction, as well as serving as Collector of Customs for the Port of San Francisco. Stockton later returned to Flint, and at the start of the Civil War he resumed military service as commander of the 16th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was later promoted to command 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, served in Virginia and Maryland and was taken prisoner at Gaines' Mill in 1862. He was imprisoned at Libby until being exchanged, afterwards serving with his brigade until resigning because of ill health in May, 1863. After the war Stockton was a successful commission merchant in Flint until retiring in the 1880s. His home in Flint, Spring Grove" is a Michigan Historic Site.
