He was the son of Elias Barbee, and his first wife, Mary (Durham) Barbee.

James D. Barbee, farmer, section 28, post office Wallace, is a native of Kentucky, and was born January 2, 1827. He was reared upon a farm, and received a good common English education. He emigrated to Missouri in 1848, locating in Platte County, where he engaged in farming; came to Buchanan County in 1865.

He was married in January 1852 to Miss Amanda Miller, also a native of Kentucky. She was born June 14, 1834. They have had 11 children, John, Mollie, Eliza, Emma, Kate, Lou, James, Effie, Agnes, Myra, and Hattie. The two oldest are dead.

Mr. B. served in the Confederate army for four years in Company I, First Missouri Calvary. He was wounded in the head slightly at Blakely, Alabama, and was taken prisoner at Vicksburg and Blakely, but was paroled and exchanged.

He is a Mason and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. He has seventy-seven acres of land which was given him by his father-in-law. It is all under fence, in a good state of cultivation, with a good house and barn and a fine orchard.
