He enlisted Feb. 24, 1865 as a private, Co. E, 28 Illinois Infantry; discharged Feb. 24, 1866 at Brownsville, Texas. Theodore Bateman was in Co. I, 28th ILL Infantry, 13th Army Corps, General Ritter commanding. her served in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. He was on the battle line in Mobile, AL, and one and a half miles away at the time of the blowing up of the magazine in a fort when so many negroes were killed."

"After leaving the war, he came to Barton County in 1867. He purchased 160 acres from a land speculator who scoured the land from the county. The area of Barton County was known as swampland. Theodore paid 3 dollars an acre for the land. He determined which 160 acres to buy by riding a horse over an area of the prairie. He picked land where the prairie grass was as high as a person's hand when he was on horseback; also land where there was little waste and on high round. He paid for it with money received when he was mustered out of the army."
