For the past year, Mrs. Gardner lived in Milwaukee and was cared for before her death by the staff at Saint John's, her family and the staff of VITAS Hospice. She previously lived at The Windsor of Savoy and before that lived for 61 years in Tolono with her family.
Mrs. Gardner was born Aug. 31, 1917, at Falmouth, Ind., a daughter of Ruby B. Crawford Hackleman and Emery H. Hackleman.
She married Karl E. Gardner on Aug. 14, 1938. Dr. Gardner died in 2004.
Mrs. Gardner is survived by her three children, James (Buffalo, N.Y.), Nancy (Oakland, Calif.) and Deborah (Dennis) Conta of Milwaukee. She also is survived by Kate R. Gardner and four grandchildren, James R. (Buffalo, N.Y.), Heidi (New York), Whitney (Joe Barnes) Zammit (Arvada, Colo.) and Donald Zammit (Sarasota, Fla.).
Mrs. Gardner graduated from Purdue University and was a charter member of the Purdue chapter of Delta Gamma social sorority.
She was an active organizer and participant in a variety of community, social and religious organizations and derived great pleasure from her many years of active involvement with Delta Gamma, Presby Hall, the Women's Club at the University of Illinois, the Champaign Social Science Club, Chapter AR of the PEO Sisterhood, the Alliance Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Friday Book Club of Champaign.
She served as elder, clerk and Sunday School teacher for First Presbyterian Church of Tolono.
Mrs. Gardner had an abiding interest in historic preservation, a discerning eye for antiques and loved to entertain new and old friends.
Her bags were always quickly packed when Karl suggested another trip, and together, they traveled the world. She was the first president of the Tolono Library Board and was a devoted reader and promoter of books and libraries throughout her long life.
