U.S. Congressman. In 1861, with the advent of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a Lieutenant in F Company, of the 16th Alabama Infantry. Wounded at the Battle of Franklin, he was taken by Union forces and imprisoned at Camp Chase Ohio, where he remained until the end of the war. After the war, he worked as a clerk of the circuit court of Lawrence County Alabama, (1865-67). He studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law Decatur, Alabama and helped establish the First National Bank of Decatur, in 1887. In 1914, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third Congress to fill the vacancy left by the death of William Richardson, serving until 1915. Declining to run for reelection, he became president of the City National Bank of Decatur, Alabama, in 1928 and also was chairman of the bank's board of directors, until his death.
