Inventor, Delta Power Tools and the first miter and scroll saws. Arriving from Germany in 1914, Herbert Tautz settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and soon invented the Delta brand name in his one-car garage in 1919. Tautz set out to design and build new tools to alleviate the challenges of woodworking. First known as Delta Specialty Company, it first made small tools for home shops and later expanded into light industrial machinery. In 1923, Tautz invented Delta Machinery's first breakthrough product, the "American Boy," which was the world's first scroll saw. Although it was built for hand-operated use in 8-inch and 12-inch sizes, the tool paved the way for future electric-powered scroll saws. As the country reached the height of the depression, Tautz and his Delta Machinery continued to forge ahead with new product introductions. By the mid 1970's, countless companies were manufacturing the saws Tautz had invented. Herbert Tautz retired in Denver, Colorado where he died in July of 1975 at the age of 79. He was cremated and his ashes are in the mausoleum next to his wife, Isodie. His urn has the writing "Inventor of Delta Power Tools" etched on it. Having many of his inventions used by the common homeowner and businesses alike, Tautz accomplished his goal of making the world of woodworking a much easier task.
