Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An attorney by profession he graduated from Miami University in 1856 and the Cincinnati Law School in 1858. He entered service during the Civil War as 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Missouri Infantry. He rose to be Assistant Adjutant General with the rank of Major on the staff of General Gordon Granger and as Lieutenant Colonel, A.A.G. and Chief of Staff of the 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland. Brevetted Brigadier General March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct during the Atlanta Campaign". From 1890-97 he was Chairman of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Park Commission.
