Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 21st New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th New York Volunteer Infantry. After he was severely wounded in combat, he was transferred to the 15th Veterans Reserve Corps, serving as its Colonel and commander. In this position he was named commander of the Camp Douglas Military Prison in Chicago, Illinois. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the war”.
