Bull, in Well 16 Days,
Still in Good Condition

A whiteface bull belonging to Cleo Walker was found Tuesday by A. T. Logue in a cistern three miles north and one and one-half miles east of Leedey after the animal had been missing for 16 days. Rescued by means of a block and tackle, the beast trotted home and seemed to be in the best of condition considering its long stay in the hole.

Mr. Walker had reported the animal missing soon after its absence first was noted. He ran advertisements in The Star last week and the week before, describing the animal, and had traveled many miles in a vain search for him.

At the place where the animal was found, a well is on one side of the road and an abandoned cistern on the other. Mr. Walker had looked into the well but not the cistern. A gourd vine had grown over a portion of the cistern's opening and it is believed the bull was following the vine when he toppled head first into the cistern.

An oil drum at the bottom of the hole was dented by the impact of the animal's 15-foot fall, yet strangely enough he appeared uninjured when rescued.

Inside the cistern was a small pool of water and a few thistles, which probably furnished sustenance for the imprisoned animal. Rescuers marveled at the lively condition in which the beast was found, being lank but far short of the gauntness which naturally would be expected in an animal having gone through such an experience.

Cleo's shop in Leedey was destroyed in the tornado that took out much of Leedey on May 31, 1947.
