Hi,

First, now that ancestry.com is using findagrave as a source, I am finding that some tree owners are going a step further and copying my memorial biographies and adding them as their own stories in their trees, without the source information. PLEASE, if you copy/paste my bios to your ancestry tree or anywhere else, INCLUDE my source information, and a link to the memorial. That way, serious researchers can see where your information comes from and be able to verify it for themselves. These profiles are revised as additional information becomes available and if you have not linked to the memorial, other researchers would have no way of knowing that.

Some tree owners are already doing this, and it is very much appreciated.

I am still researching James Shaffer, who was my 4th great grandfather.

Headstone & obituary indicate that James was born on or about December 22, 1787 in New Jersey. His parents were Henry Shaffer and Henry's first wife, Mary Miller.

His father came from Germany to America a few years before the Revolutionary War (records suggest Henry served in the War, but I have not found military records yet to support that). Henry married James's mother sometime around 1787, and they lived in New Jersey when James was born. Henry & Mary moved to Lycoming County Pensylvania in 1802, when James was a teenager. In 1809, while still in Lycoming County, James married Margaret Brooks, daughter of Revolutionary Soldier Benjamin Brooks.

James, with wife Margaret and their son Wiliam went out to Ohio about 1810, with James's father and his older brother William. Their father Henry had purchased some land there, and the brothers worked to improve the property over the next few years. The timetable is a little fuzzy to me, but apparently Henry was there with them initially, then went back to Lycoming PA to get the rest of his family. His return was delayed by the war of 1812, and James mother died in Lycoming before Henry returned to Ohio with the rest of the family.

During the war of 1812, James was called to service, leaving Margaret home with three small children. Family history reports that the homestead was attacked by Shawnee Indians under Tecumseh while he was away (please see full story of family in Ohio under Maragaret's findagrave profile).

James & Margaret returned to central Pennsylvania after the war (sometime between birth of Rebecca in Ohio on Feb 9, 1813 and birth of son Benjamin in Lycoming PA on Oct 5, 1814).

Census records show the family "moving" from Lycoming, to Clinton, to Cameron County, PA over the years. Review of County histories at Wikipedia.com, though, tells that the original huge county of Lycoming was subdivided over the years, and I belive that the family likely remained in the same place the entire time, that place being "First Fork", or Sinnemahoning in Gibson Township.

All counted, James & Margaret had 15 children (10 boys & 5 girls) who all lived to adulthood. Their children are:

-William Shaffer 1810-1833
-Henry Shaffer 1812-1864
-Rebecca Shaffer 1813-1893 (John Berfield; James Cole)
-Benjamin Brooks Shaffer 1814-1856
-James Shaffer Jr 1816-1909
-Joseph Shaffer 1817-1897
-John Shaffer 1818-1849
-Mary Ann Shaffer 1819-1869
-David Shaffer 1821-1872
-Wesley Shaffer 1823-1875
-Washington Shaffer 1824-1872
-Jacob L Shaffer 1826-1904
-Elizabeth Shaffer 1828-1912
-Margaret Shaffer 1830-1851
-Sarah Jane Shaffer 1831-1894

James died at his home in Grove Township, Cameron County, PA on August 25, 1872 at the age of 84 years 8 months and 3 days. At the time of his death, he was recognized as one of the "oldest and most respected" citizens. He was a member of the M. E. Church, and died "triumphant in the faith".

He is buried at Jericho Cemetery in Sinnemahoning.
