Prince Imperial. He was the only child of Napoleon III and his wife the Empress Eugenie. He served in the British Army as his family was in exile in England. He wanted to make a name for himself. He was in a scouting party in South Africa during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 that had dismounted. A surprise Zulu attack spooked his horse and he was left on foot to defend himself against overwhelming odds with only a pistol. He received sixteen wounds, all in the front. Queen Victoria attended his funeral. His death sent shock waves throughout Europe as he was the last dynastic hope for the restoration of the Bonapartes to the throne of France. (Bio by ) "He joined the French Army in 1870 at the outbreak of the Franco-German War. After the first defeats he had to flee from France with the Imperial Family and settled in England at Chislehurst (Kent), completing his military education at Woolwich and Sandhurst. On his father's death (Jan. 9, 1873) the Bonapartists proclaimed him Napoleon IV, and he became the official pretender. He became an officer in the British Army and volunteered to join the British expedition to Zululand in February 1879. While out on reconnaissance with a few troopers he was surprised by Zulus and speared to death at Ulundi. His body was brought back to England and buried in a special mausoleum constructed by his mother at St. Michaels Abbey in FarnboroughÊ(Hampshire) alongside his father, the last Emperor of the French."
