James enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 15 September 1862 in Iuka, Mississippi. He was mustered as a Private in Company D, Moreland's Cavalry, Alabama. He transferred to Company I on 1 April 1864. He was probably promoted to Corporal after transferring to Company I. No note found on CMSR as to when promotion took place. James was captured near Huntsville, Alabama on 23 December 1864. He was transferred to Camp Chase Confederate Prison in Ohio on 9 January 1865 from Louisville, Kentucky. He arrived at Camp Chase on 11 January 1865 where he remained as a POW until his death. He died 16 May 1865 at the prison of scurvy and buried in grave #1972. James served with two brothers in this regiment, Levi Franklin and Henry S. Gable.
