Joseph Anton Pius Ferdinand Morant, 83, Route 3, Box 15, Mandan, died of cancer on April 12, 1993, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Mandan, with the Rev Ray Martin officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Joseph was born on June 18, 1909, in Mandan, the son of Ferdinand and Maria (Zueger) Morant. As a child he lived with his parents on a farm in Oliver County until the family moved to Mandan. He attended school in Mandan and later moved to Sioux County where he lived for several years with his Aunt Mary and his cousins, Louis and Joseph Meisel on their ranch. His mother had moved to Longview, Wash, so he decided to go there to live.

On the way he ran out of funds and stopped to work for a few years on a large cattle ranch near Havre, Mont. It was here that he became a cowboy complete with hat, boots, spurs and jeans. He looked that way for the remainder of his life. He moved on to Longview, where he worked for Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co, returning to Mandan periodically. In 1953 he decided to remain in Mandan with the William Borden family, where he helped manage the Borden farm for many years. He was good with livestock and loved to see the baby calves grow. He also farmed for a neighbor, Robert Sylvester, for 21 years, for Irvin Young and on his own land near Selfridge in Sioux County.

The many boys he helped and trained to work on the farm were a joy to him as were three special little girls, Stephanie and Stacey Hubbard and Berna Jean Walsh. He loved to fish and twice a year went to Canada with his cousins, Bob and Carl Meisel. He also enjoyed summer rodeos, playing cards and driving good cars. He was a member of the Mandan Elks Lodge.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, August and Alta Morant, Longview, Wash; two nephews, Michael and Maurice Morant and eight nieces, Patti Murphy Teeters, Janice Murphy Nemeth, twins Jean Murphy and Joan Murphy Allen, Christine Eaton Ivey, Marcia Morant Hamm, Margaret Morant, Marie Morant Kimble; his cousins Art and Marion Zueger, Mandan, Bob and Carl Meisel, Rapid City, Sister Emily Meisel, Richardton, Laura Borden Cook, Salem, Ore, and Georgiana Borden of Mandan. He is also survived by cousins: George, Jim, Mary, Polly and Erica Meisel, and Emil, Paul, David and Sonja Zueger and families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Rose, Freida and Gertrude.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the School of Hope, Bismarck, the Anne Carlson School, Jamestown or Home on the Range for Boys.
